How Alabama grades schools

The Alabama State Department of Education gives every public school and district an A through F grade each year. The score blends academic achievement, academic growth, chronic absenteeism and progress for English learners, and for high schools the graduation rate and college and career readiness. It is a useful starting point, not the whole story. Visit, ask about the programs your kids care about, and talk to parents in the neighborhood.

Questions about schools

Do private schools and homeschooling show up here?

These pages cover public schools, which is what a home address decides. If you are planning on private school or homeschooling, we are glad to talk through how that changes where you might want to live.

How current is the school information?

The grades are the latest the state has published, for the 2024-25 school year. Zones come from city GIS maps. Home sales figures are a snapshot taken in October 2026; the homes for sale and recent sales on each school page load live.

Can you send me homes in a specific school zone?

Yes. Tell us the schools and your price range and we will set up a search that sends new listings in that zone the day they hit the market. Call or text (256) 808-6861.
