Private Schools in Huntsville, Madison and North Alabama
Tuition, grades, affiliation and CHOOSE Act status for 28 private schools in Huntsville, Madison, Harvest, Hazel Green, Owens Cross Roads, Athens and Decatur, plus how Alabama regulates private schools and how to compare them.
North Alabama has a deep bench of private schools: a large independent prep school, parish Catholic schools, classical Christian schools, Montessori, Adventist and Islamic schools, and dozens of church schools of every size. This guide pulls the facts parents ask us about into one place, taken from each school's own published tuition sheets and the state's CHOOSE Act list, so you can narrow the list before you start touring.
Our own kids went through Huntsville City Schools (Challenger, Farley and Grissom), so we know the public side firsthand. For private schools we rely on what the schools publish, and we tell you where we could not confirm something.
Check every number with the school. Tuition shown is what each school published for 2026-27 when we checked in October 2026. Fees, discounts, sibling rates and financial aid change the real cost. Where a school does not publish its rates in a form we could check, the table says to ask the school instead of guessing. We are real estate agents, not education consultants; use this list to start your research, not finish it.
How Alabama regulates private schools
Alabama gives private schools a lot of room. The state does not require them to be accredited or licensed, and it does not set their curriculum. What the law does require is fairly short:
- Two kinds of nonpublic schools. Ala. Code 16-28-1 defines a private school as one run by a nongovernmental entity for any of grades K-12, including preschool, and a church school as one run as a ministry of a local church, group of churches, denomination or association of churches that takes no state or federal funding.
- Registration. Private schools register with the State Department of Education each year by October 10 and report enrollment, staff, course of study, term length and tuition (Ala. Code 16-1-11). Church schools are exempt.
- Attendance. Private schools report enrollees to the local superintendent within five days of opening and report absences (16-28-7). Both private and church schools keep an attendance register (16-28-8).
Because accreditation is optional, it is one of the best questions to ask. Accredited schools usually go through regular outside reviews, and accreditation can matter when a student transfers credits or applies to some colleges. Common accreditors here include Cognia, the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS) and the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI). Confirm a school's status on the accreditor's own directory rather than relying on a logo.
The CHOOSE Act and private school tuition
Alabama's CHOOSE Act funds education savings accounts that families can spend on tuition and other approved expenses through the state's ClassWallet platform. For 2026-27, the Governor's office reported about 49,000 applications and more than 34,000 approvals, with $7,000 per student for participating private schools. For that year, new families had to meet an income limit, with priority for certain groups. The state has said the program opens to every family regardless of income starting in 2027-28. Watch chooseact.alabama.gov for the next application window and apply early; funding is limited.
26 of the 28 schools in this guide appear on the Department of Revenue's participating schools list. A $7,000 account covers most or all of the base tuition at many of the church and parish schools below, and a meaningful part of it at the higher-priced schools. Homeschool families get a different amount; see our homeschooling in Alabama guide.

How to choose a private school
- Start with what your child needs. Class size, faith, academics, learning support, arts or athletics. A school that fits one child may not fit a sibling.
- Get the full cost in writing. Ask for tuition plus every fee: registration, technology, books, uniforms, field trips, after-school care and transportation. Ask about sibling, church member, military and pay-in-full discounts, and need-based aid.
- Ask about accreditation and transcripts. Which accreditor, when the last review was, and how credits transfer to public schools and colleges.
- Ask about learning support. Some schools here run dedicated dyslexia programs, such as Greengate at Randolph and the dyslexia center at Lindsay Lane. Others have little formal support. Bring any testing or plans your child already has.
- Check athletics. Some schools play in the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) alongside public schools; others play in private school leagues. If a sport matters, ask which league and what teams the school fields.
- Ask about waitlists and timing. Popular grades fill early. Ask when applications open, when decisions come out and when deposits are due, then line that up with your move and your CHOOSE Act application.
- Tour, and drive it at drop-off time. The commute twice a day is part of the decision. Do the drive from the neighborhoods you are considering at 7:30 a.m.
Choosing where to live around a private school
A private school does not depend on your address, which opens up more of the map. A few things still matter:
- The drive. Map the school, your work and any after-school activities together. Our commute guide covers the main routes and rush-hour trouble spots.
- The public school zone still affects resale. Most buyers after you will care about the zoned public schools, and if a child ever goes back to public school, the zone decides where. Every public school around here has a page with the homes zoned for it; start with our school rankings.
- Budget for both. Tuition is a monthly cost that competes with the mortgage. If you are buying and paying tuition, run the numbers together before you pick a price range.
- Look across town lines. Several schools draw students from Huntsville, Madison and the county. Westminster runs campuses in both Huntsville and Madison and a shuttle from South Huntsville.
Browse by area: Huntsville, Madison, Harvest, Hazel Green, Owens Cross Roads, Hampton Cove, Athens and Decatur. Thinking about teaching at home instead, or in a hybrid program? Several schools above run homeschool or part-time options, and our homeschool guide explains how that works in Alabama.

Questions about private schools in Alabama
How much does private school cost in Huntsville?
Published 2026-27 tuition at the schools in this guide runs from about $3,300 a year for the youngest grades at a classical school with part-time home days, to about $27,000 for high school at Randolph. Most Christian and parish schools fall roughly between $6,000 and $15,000 before fees and discounts. Many schools add registration, technology, facility and activity fees.
Can I use the CHOOSE Act for private school in Alabama?
Yes, if the school is a participating school. For 2026-27 the CHOOSE Act education savings account is $7,000 per student at a participating private school. The state has said the program opens to all families regardless of income starting with 2027-28. Check the Alabama Department of Revenue's participating schools list and chooseact.alabama.gov.
Do Alabama private schools have to be accredited?
No. Alabama does not require private schools to be accredited or licensed. Many choose accreditation through groups such as Cognia, SAIS or ACSI, so ask each school which accreditor it uses and confirm it on the accreditor's site.
What is the difference between a private school and a church school in Alabama?
Under Alabama law, a church school is run as a ministry of a local church, group of churches, denomination or association and takes no state or federal money. Church schools do not have to register with the State Department of Education. Other private schools register each year by October 10.
Does the public school zone matter if my kids go to private school?
It can. Most buyers who come after you will care about the zoned public schools, so the zone can affect resale. And if a child ever moves back to public school, the zone decides where they go.
