The big golf communities

Hampton Cove and the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail

Hampton Cove grew up around the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail site that opened in 1993 on land donated by the Hays family. Today it has 54 public holes: the Highlands course, restored to its original links-style design in 2008, the River course along the Flint River floodplain, with water on 16 of its 18 holes and not a single bunker, and an 18-hole par-3 Short Course. The neighborhoods around it range from starter townhomes to big custom homes, and the whole 35763 zip code currently averages around $525K.

Valley Hill in South Huntsville

Valley Hill Country Club is a private club with 27 holes in three nines, Hillside, Valleyside and Lakeside, right in the middle of south Huntsville. Unlike the newer golf communities, it is surrounded by established neighborhoods like Willowbrook, Lily Flagg Acres and Double Tree, most built in the 1960s and 1970s on bigger lots with mature trees. Valley Bend shopping is about a mile away, the Aldridge Creek Greenway runs within a quarter mile of the club, and downtown is about 5.6 miles north, so it is an easy everyday location even if you never play.

The Ledges

The Ledges sits on top of Huntsville Mountain at about 1,580 feet, with a private course designed by Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry that opened in 2000. Homes and home sites here are at the high end of the market for the city, and the views go with it.

Canebrake and Southern Gayles in Athens

Athens has two golf neighborhoods worth knowing. Canebrake is a private golf community on about 850 acres east of I-65, and Southern Gayles is an 18-hole course open to the public, with newer homes going up in Southern Gayles West.

Gunter's Landing on Lake Guntersville

Gunter's Landing pairs an 18-hole course with Lake Guntersville. The Grande at Gunter's Landing is a newer townhome community there, which makes it a popular lock-and-leave option for weekend golfers and boaters.

Becky Peirce, Huntsville's old municipal course, closed in 2016. Goose Pond Colony in Scottsboro adds 36 more holes on the lake.

What living on a golf course is really like

  • Which side of the fairway. Homes along the right side of a hole (for a right-handed golfer) catch more slices. Behind the tee box or along the left side is usually quieter.
  • Orientation. Check where the hole runs relative to your back windows and patio. Facing down the fairway is great; facing the landing area is not.
  • Membership. Find out if the home comes with a membership, requires one, or has nothing to do with the club at all. Get it in writing.
  • HOA and club rules. Many golf neighborhoods limit fences, landscaping and outbuildings along the course.
  • Morning noise. Mowers start early. That is the trade-off for the view.

Golf home questions

Do I have to join the club to buy a home on a golf course?

It depends on the course. Public courses like the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Hampton Cove sell tee times to anyone. Private clubs such as Huntsville Country Club, Valley Hill, The Ledges, Canebrake and Burningtree have their own membership rules, and some neighborhoods tie membership to the home. We get the membership details in writing before you make an offer.

Is there a public golf course in Huntsville?

Yes. The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Hampton Cove has 54 public holes, and Sunset Landing near the airport and Colonial Golf Club in Meridianville are also open to the public. The old Becky Peirce municipal course closed in 2016 and is now part of John Hunt Park.

What should I watch for when buying on a fairway?

Stray golf balls, the direction of the hole relative to your windows and back patio, cart path traffic, and any club rules about fences or landscaping. The best lots are usually behind the tee or along the left side of a fairway for right-handed golfers, where fewer slices land.

How does this page find golf course homes?

It searches MLS listings where the agent marked Golf Course as an exterior feature, plus the neighborhoods built around the major courses. Not every listing near a course gets tagged, so we also watch those neighborhoods directly.

Looking for a home on the course?

Tell us how often you play, whether you want public or private, and how far you are willing to drive. We will match you with the right course and the right side of the fairway.
