How the League Works

The Rocket City Swim League (RCSL) is a volunteer-run summer league that has been going for more than 50 years; the 2017 City Meet was the 52nd. Each team is based at a neighborhood pool, swim club or recreation center, and each team runs its own sign-ups and sets its own fees.

  • Ages: roughly 5 through 17 or 18, and some teams take 4-year-olds who can swim on their own. Age groups run 8 and under, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14 and 15-18.
  • The season: practices start around Memorial Day week. Most teams hold time trials, then swim about five home-and-away dual meets on Wednesday evenings through June.
  • Leagues: teams are split into A, B and C leagues of about six. How a team scores at City Meet sets its league for the next summer, so every swimmer's points count.
  • Invitationals: clubs host extra meets in June, like the Sherwood Invitational and the Mountain Springs Stingray Saltwater Invitational.
  • Signing up: registration is through each team, usually in April and May. Some teams require a pool or club membership; others, like Byrd Spring and Redstone, do not.

Diving

Diving is a full part of the league, with its own meets and its own championship. Dive dual meets are held separately from swim meets; Piedmont, for example, had three Monday dive meets in June 2023. Teams typically group divers as 8 and under and 9 and up, and practices are held at home pools that have boards.

The City Diving Championships are held in the days just before the City Swim Meet at the indoor pool at the Dr. Richard Showers, Sr. Recreation Center, 4600 Blue Spring Rd NW, which has two 1-meter boards. Younger divers go first in the morning, and older divers after a midday break. It is free to watch. Nine teams posted scores at City Dive in 2023: Greenwyche, Jones Valley, Piedmont, Lily Flagg, Camelot, Whitesburg, Blossomwood, Monte Sano and Sherwood.

City Meet: The Big Weekend

The season ends with the City Swim Meet, a two-day weekend in mid-July at the Huntsville Aquatics Center, 2213 Drake Ave SW at Brahan Spring Park. More than 1,500 swimmers are expected. Swimmers 10 and under race in the morning sessions and older swimmers in the afternoon. To swim at City Meet, a swimmer generally needs to have swum in at least two dual meets.

The 2026 City Meet was July 11 and 12. Jones Valley won the 2023 City Meet, and Greenwyche won the overall title in 2017. Before the Aquatics Center's Competition Pool opened in 2017, City Meet was held at the old natatorium, and more than 50 years ago at the outdoor Big Spring pool.

The team list is from the 2023 City Meet results and team pages. Teams can change from year to year, and a YMCA team swam in 2017 but not in 2023. Links go to each club's own site where we could verify one. Membership is usually separate from owning a home nearby, so ask the club how to join.

Madison and Athens

The City of Madison and Athens teams swim in a different summer league, the Alabama Recreation and Parks Association (ARPA) league:

  • Madison Dolphins Swim & Dive (founded 1980) swim and dive at the Dublin Park pool, 8324 Madison Pike, and compete in ARPA District II. See homes near Dublin Park.
  • Athens Gators compete in ARPA District One and won the 2023 district championship at the Athens Sportsplex pool. The team is open to Limestone County residents ages 5 to 18. See homes near the Athens Sportsplex.

Year-Round Swimming: Huntsville Swim Association

The Huntsville Swim Association is different from the summer league. It is a year-round USA Swimming club, founded in 1969 as the Rocket City Aquatic Club, with more than 600 swimmers and two Olympians, and it trains at the Huntsville Aquatics Center. Many summer league swimmers also swim year-round with HSA.
