Homes With a Storm Shelter in North Alabama

North Alabama gets severe weather in the spring and again in late fall, and tornado warnings are part of life here. A built-in storm shelter or safe room is near the top of the list for a lot of buyers, and it is almost impossible to find with a normal home search.

This page shows every home for sale where the listing agent checked storm shelter. Shelters range from in-garage steel units to underground and poured concrete rooms, so look at the photos and ask about the type.

Questions About Storm Shelter Homes

What kind of shelter does a home have?

The MLS box only says storm shelter. It could be an underground shelter, a steel unit in the garage or a reinforced room inside the house. Ask for the type, size, installer and whether it was built to FEMA P-320 or ICC 500 guidance.

Should I have the shelter inspected?

Yes. Have your home inspector look at it, check that the door, anchors and ventilation are in good shape, and ask the seller for any installation paperwork or warranty that transfers.

Can I add a shelter to a home that doesn't have one?

Often, yes. In-garage and underground units are commonly added after purchase. Costs depend on the type and site, so get quotes from local installers before you count on it.

Why might a home with this feature not show up here?

This page relies on the feature boxes the listing agent checked. If the agent only mentioned it in the description or photos, it will not appear. Ask us and we can search the descriptions too.

How current is this list?

Homes drop off as soon as they go under contract or come off the market. If the page has been open a while, refresh it.

Can you tell me when a new one comes on the market?

Yes. Use the Alert Me button to create a free account and tell us what you want, or call or text (256) 808-6861. We will set up a search that watches for new listings with this feature.
