Before you buy a home with a pool
- Get the pool inspected separately. A general home inspection usually only glances at the pool. A pool company can check the pump, filter, heater, liner or surface, plumbing and electrical.
- Ask about the liner and equipment age. Vinyl liners, pumps and heaters all wear out on their own schedule, and the listing often says when they were replaced.
- Call your insurance agent. Pools change your homeowners policy, and some insurers want a fence or a locking cover.
- Check the fence and gate. Look at whether the pool area is fenced and gated, and check any city or HOA rules that apply.
- Remember Alabama is buyer-beware. Sellers here are not generally required to fill out a disclosure form, so ask direct questions about leaks, repairs and how the pool has been maintained, and get the answers in writing.

Get pool home alertsOur MLS feed does not include a pool field, so we find these homes by reading each listing's description for a private pool and leave out community and neighborhood pools. The list stays current and may miss a home or include one described incorrectly by its listing agent.
